My Relationship with Watchman Nee and Witness Lee
I have known Watchman Nee since I was very young. I am seventy-eight years old now. When I was seven years old, the house that my father and I lived in and Watchman Nee's house were in the same alley. My father was one of the co-workers of Watchman Nee at the beginning of his ministry. God raised up Watchman Nee in the early twentieth century as the seer of the divine revelation in the present age. After he received salvation in Fu-Chow, China in 1920, he read the Bible carefully and found out that many practices in Christianity were not according to the Bible. For example, the Bible says to believe and be baptized, but many Christians were sprinkled instead of baptized. Instead of breaking bread weekly, they received the sacrament every three months. There was a teaching that one cannot proclaim oneself saved even after one's believing into Christ because salvation is determined only by Christ at His judgment seat. However, the Bible says, “Those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Watchman Nee wrote The Assurance of Salvation to address this wrong teaching, which was not according to the Bible. He recovered many important truths in the Bible. He came to Shanghai from Fu-Chow, and led many revival meetings in 1927. I attended all these meetings. His speaking was full of the power of the Spirit. I also worked in the same company with him, the Chinese Biochemical Firm. The Communist Party arrested him in April 1952, and arrested me in October of the same year.
Witness Lee quit his job to work full time with Watchman Nee in 1934. On one Lord's Day after his arrival, I received the Lord with many tears through his gospel preaching. I was only thirteen years old. He was my spiritual father. Afterward, he led us to preach the gospel in the colleges in Shanghai, and many students received salvation. He led hundreds of believers to preach the gospel marching in the streets, wearing shirts with gospel messages written on them. After the Communist Party took over Shanghai in 1949, he went to Taiwan, where he led many people to the Lord and set up many local churches. He came to the United States in 1962 with the same burden. He moved to Anaheim, California in 1974, where he started the Living Stream Ministry, and began the Life-study of the Bible. He continued and expanded the divine revelation received by Watchman Nee, recovering more truth in the Bible. His Recovery Version of the Bible with footnotes was the best study Bible in both English and Chinese that I have ever read. I heard his speaking many times after I came to the United States in 1990. These speakings were full of power and his books were numerous. His ministry is a true continuation of the divine revelation in this age seen by Watchman Nee.
